Chapter Fifteen:
The peace and quiet that Zero wants so desperately from Mystic falls doesn’t last long. It’s a pity, really, Zero likes it here. It’s brimming with supernatural creatures, the business is doing good and Zero finally feels like he might belong somewhere — belong in Mystic Falls.
He likes Klaus and so does his Hollow. Which is weird, but not uncommon. It’s just… surprising, because Zero can’t remember the last time he’s gotten along with his inner Hollow. There’s always a battle for dominance just at the surface of his thoughts. It’s annoying and tiring, but it is what it is.
Zero has been through much worse.
He just wishes he could be like the others.
Other half-human half-hollow beings that latch onto other supernatural creatures and just exist. In peace.
What a wild concept.
Zero mourns for a chance like that. It’s quite unfortunate that the rest of the world just doesn’t get his memo.
“I can’t be a Vice Captain,” Zero says, staring down into his cup of sweet tea owlishly. His back is leaned against the kitchen counter and it’s digging into his lower back uncomfortably. “Or a Lieutenant, or whatever you call it these days.”
“I’m afraid these are the direct orders from Central Forty-Six,” Momo says. She looks mostly the same as the last time Zero had seen her. She’s still short and skinny with short black hair. The only difference is that her eyes are not as warm before, they’re darker now.
“I’m sorry,” Momo apologies and her expression shifts into worry. “If you don’t except the offer, they’ll execute you Zero, please.”
Zero snorts. “Right,” he says, because what else is he supposed to do? He musters up the energy to ask, “and which division will I be under?”
“The eighth,” Momo answers.
Zero makes a face. “Under Shunsui?”
There’s a twitch in Momo’s face. “No,” she pauses, like she’s looking for the right words, “He’s been promoted to commander. You’ll be working under Lisa.”
“Can’t believe she managed to work with a perv like him,” Zero mumbles, slightly surprised. “How’s Aizen treating you these days, by the way?”
Momo’s face twitches again and then pinches, looking sour. “You left,” she says softly, “and a lot of bad things have happened since then.”
Zero watches as Momo momentarily disappears into her head and waits for her to resurface back. Something huge must have happened between the time that Zero e̶s̶c̶a̶p̶e̶d left Soul Society and wandered across Hueco Mundo for a few years.
Maybe more than a few years. A decade perhaps? Zero wasn’t exactly keeping track while he was stuck in a land full of endless sand and other bloodthirsty Hollows.
He had to fight his way out. He had to earn it.
And he did.
“We’re forbidden to talk about the events,” Momo explains, coming back from her mind, “it happened not long ago, that’s all that I can say.”
The dark haired female hesitates before she continues speaking, “there’s someone you can ask though. Isshin’s son. He was there when it happened.”
“Huh,” Zero breathes out. He lifts his tea up to his mouth and takes a small sip. So, Isshin had a kid. That was…also kind of surprising. “I’ll think about the offer,” he says eventually. He’s not scared of Central Forty-Six. They could suck his dick for all he cared. He just wants to keep Sherry and Sai safe, as far from Soul Society as humanly possibly.
One war was enough for them to go through. Zero doesn’t think he could stand watching them go through a possible second or even third one. No one ever knew with the Soul Society.
Zero worries his bottom lip between his teeth. He places his empty cup into the sink and pauses, staring at it like it’ll give him the answers to all his questions and fears in a matter of few seconds.
It doesn’t.
Which sucks.
“I’ll relay the information,” Momo says. “It was good seeing you,” she smiles and then adds a quiet, “be careful,” before she disappears in the blink of an eye.
Zero sighs and mulls over his options. He wants to keep his friends safe. Surely they’ll be okay in the human world without him.
Right?
Lowering his face into his hand, Zero groans loudly. “Why is my life this shit? He whines. “Why couldn’t I have been some rich brat living a life of luxury?”
After a few minutes, Zero comes to the conclusion that he’ll accept the offer, play the pawn to Central Forty-Six once more and just hope for the best. It’s to keep his friends safe, after all.
Yeah. That sounds good. Safe.
Zero’s mind leads him to Klaus and he sighs once more. “I’ll deal with him tomorrow,” Zero tells himself softly.
That night, Zero sleeps fitfully.
—–
The next day, Zero makes his way to the Mikaelson boarding house, opens the door, and makes a beeline straight for Klaus. “Let’s go,” he says, taking a hold of Klaus’s much bigger hand and leading him towards the stairs.
“Are you alright, love?” Klaus asks. Zero can’t see his face with his back turned towards him. It’s fine. It’s fine.
“Peachy,” Zero replies, taking Klaus up the stairs. “In fact, I’m so peachy I want to take a nap with you.”
“A nap,” Klaus echoes behind him, sounding baffled. Once they’re on the second floor, Klaus tugs on Zero’s hand and effectively stops them both in their steps.
“Look at me,” Klaus orders.
Zero doesn’t turn around, just grits his teeth. His chest burns uncomfortably. “No.”
“Zero,” Klaus warns, a growl rumbling deep from within his chest, loud and dangerous and angry.
“Fine,” Zero snaps. He slowly turns around to face Klaus and bites his tongue to stop himself from saying something stupid. Like, ‘hey, did you know that there’s a whole squad out there waiting to kill me just in case I don’t take up the offer from Soul Society? Ha ha.’
Klaus searches his face for something. His gaze is hot and so, so, angry. Zero avoids looking him into the eyes, opting to stare at the wall over Klaus’s shoulder.
“I need you to tell me what’s wrong,” Klaus murmurs, taking a step closer to Zero. They’re chest to chest now and Klaus is so fucking warm, Zero just wants to leech off all the heat that he can.
But he’s stubborn and afraid and stupid, so he doesn’t. Instead he raises his chin in defiance and gives a witty retort, “I politely decline.”
Klaus isn’t having any of it today, apparently. He grabs Zero by the waist, making him yelp in the process and easily lifts him up, throws him over his shoulder like he weighs nothing and pats him mockingly on the ass.
Shocked, Zero lets Klaus take him to his bedroom. He then promptly gets thrown onto the large bed with no apparent care.
Klaus move around the room, shutting drapes and readjusting the lights in the bedroom. Zero watches him up until the point that Klaus start to take off his shirt.
“What are you doing?” Zero asks, pointedly staring at the door. It’s the furthest thing in the room from Klaus.
“What does it look like?” Klaus huffs. It’s considerably darker in the room now.
“Gee,” Zero sasses, “I’m not sure. Maybe I’m watching an add for hem–“
“Don’t even try to finish that,” Klaus sounds even more annoyed now. “Lay down on the bed,” he orders again, “get comfortable.”
Sighing, Zero does as told so. He kicks off his vans and shuffles further up the bed to get more comfortable. He settles underneath the covers, facing the wall so that he doesn’t have to see Klaus without a shirt on.
God, Zero internally calls, why do you have to test me like this?
He feels the bed dip on the other side and tenses. It’s not the first time he’s taken an impromptu nap with Klaus. It’s just the first time Klaus has been shirtless.
Fuck.
Klaus presses his face between Zero’s neck and shoulder and breathes in gently. “You smell good,” he says, voice low and hot. His chest is pressed firmly against Zero’s back and his large, muscled arm is wrapped tightly around his waist.
All Zero can manage in his flustered state is a pathetic whine. He rolls his head to the side to give Klause more excess to his neck and the other male makes a pleased sound deep from the back of his throat.
Zero is warm now, floaty, and his stomach is filled with butterflies. He’s wrapped in the scent of woods after heavy rainfall and all his worries have just vanished for the time being.
Klause presses a soft, tender kiss onto Zero’s shoulder. It’s awfully intimate and Zero immediately sobers.
“Can you not suffocate me with your dumb pheromones?” He twists around to give Klause a glare.
“You started it,” Klaus defends himself, “walking in here smelling like…” he trails off quietly, closing his mouth to clench his jaw tight.
“Like what?” Zero challenges.
Klaus doesn’t answer him. Instead, he maneuvers himself into a position where he’s caging Zero against the bed from above.
Zero’s face has never been this red in his life. He’s sure of it. “Klaus,” he tries to whine, but his voice comes out hoarse. He’s weak.
He lets Klaus pull his hoodie up until it’s bunched up near his neck and shoulders. Here he is, showing of his stomach to a predator that could easily go for the kill right now. But Zero’s head is empty. There are no warning bells. There’s just a shiver of anticipation running down his spine.
Klaus drags the tips of his fingers from the middle of Zero’s chest down to his soft stomach. “Purr for me,” he murmurs hotly, equal parts commanding and possessive. His eyes flash gold as Zero arches into his touch with a delicate purr.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuuuuuck.
